Politico First Look: Effective Tax Rates Group Urges Comprehensive Reform

The ongoing effort to reform the nation’s tax code has taken a backseat to the government shutdown and debt ceiling crisis currently occupying Congress’ attention, but a coalition of advocacy groups focused on lowering effective tax rates — the rate corporations and individuals actually pay — sent a letter to lawmakers urging them to continue on with reform efforts. The letter from The Coalition for Fair Effective Tax Rates reiterated the group’s stance that tax reform can only be equitable if the tax burden is based on taxes paid rather than the sticker-price rate — the marginal rate — many corporations can dramatically lower through deductions and breaks.
