Statement by the Coalition for Fair Effective Tax Rates about President Obama’s State of the Union address:

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 29, 2014 – President Obama’s State of the Union address was a disappointment for supporters of true tax reform. Our Coalition sent a letter to the President highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive, revenue-neutral tax reform. But last night the President fell well short of this goal. Tax reform must be comprehensive and address both the corporate and individual sides of the code in order to be effective. The large discrepancies among industries in effective tax rates – the amounts businesses actually pay – is glaring and needs to be corrected. Now is the time to reform the code and create a fairer system.

About the Coalition for Fair Effective Tax Rates:

The Coalition for Fair Effective Tax Rates is a diverse group of national, regional and state associations representing more than 1,500,000 businesses, both large and small, whose mission is to educate Congress and key stakeholders that tax reform should be viewed through the lens of effective tax rates, the amount of taxes businesses actually pay. The Coalition intends to use the metric of effective tax rates to bolster the case for comprehensive tax reform that broadens the tax base while lowering tax rates for corporations and pass-through businesses that pay taxes using individual tax rates.
